Since here at Speedify we help live streamers from Twitch and other platforms improve their broadcasts, we always want to know exactly how much our service helps content creators. So, we put Speedify to the test with OBS on MacOS. Below are the results we got from testing and how you can enhance your live streams. Naturally, you can also forget about issues such as dropped frames, buffering, disconnects and network errors.
Twitch Test Tool For Mac
There are many online reviews and discussions where streamers agree that Speedify helps their live streaming. But we wanted to test it ourselves and see exactly how much it does that. Especially now, when we have the brand new Speedify protocol in place.
Test setup: our goal is to evaluate Twitch live streaming improvements with OBS when using Speedify vs. not using Speedify on MacOS. So we ran multiple tests on a full HD video stream. Data is according to the Twitch Inspector tool.
The first test was using the 300 / 150 Mbps Wi-Fi connection. There was no significant improvement in terms of bitrate when using Speedify vs. not using Speedify. That's mainly because the bitrate needed to stream a full HD video at 30 fps is covered by the Wi-Fi connection.
While there are many different ways to stream, these are just a couple options for beginners. If you want to get more advanced, there are a slew of software programs and tools to employ for your content.

Time and resources previously spent building and maintaining on-premises macOS environments can now be refocused on building creative and useful apps. Development teams can now seamlessly provision and access macOS compute environments on demand to enjoy convenient distributed testing and fast app builds. This brings additional choices to developers so they can use Mac as their trusted platform, on premises or in the cloud. EC2 Mac instances help offload the effort in managing infrastructure to AWS, so Apple developers can focus on building their applications.
EC2 Mac instances provide developers with seamless access to dozens of AWS services, so developers can more easily and efficiently collaborate with team members and develop, build, test, analyze, and improve their apps. Similar to other EC2 instances, you can use EC2 Mac instances together with AWS services and features, such as Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) for network security, Amazon Elastic Block Store (EBS) for expandable storage, Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) for distributing build queues, Amazon FSx for scalable file storage, and AWS Systems Manager Agent (SSM Agent) for configuring, managing, and patching macOS environments.
EC2 M1 Mac instances enable Apple Silicon macOS environments, for the first time on AWS, to develop, build, test, deploy, and run Apple applications. When rearchitecting your macOS applications for Apple silicon Mac computers, you can now achieve faster builds with bare-metal performance and convenient distributed testing without having to procure, install, manage, patch, and upgrade the physical infrastructure.
EC2 Mac instances allow developers to launch macOS environments within minutes, adjust provisioned capacity as needed, and only pay for actual usage with pay-as-you-go pricing. Developers save money since they only need to pay for the systems that are in use. For example, more capacity can be used when building an app, and less capacity when testing.
"Now with EC2 Mac instances, I can spin up a new virtual machine in minutes, improve security by using EC2 Instance Profiles, and create, test, and roll-out a new Xcode AMI across all of our build agents 4x faster. These speed improvements enabled us to reduce our macOS fleet size by 50%."
Live streaming software is a tool that many broadcasters use to encode their live streams. This software can also be used to edit and mix broadcasts in real-time. Some live streaming software even supports the use of text and graphic overlays.
Streaming software is not the same as a streaming provider. A streaming platform is a solution designed to host and distribute your video content. These two tools work together to bring your broadcasts to life.
The standard version of vMix is only compatible with Windows operating systems. However, the vMix screen recording tool is available on both macOS and Windows. The latest version of the Windows-specific software is 24.0.0.71 and includes an upgrade to a free 60 day trial of vMix PRO for download. While vMix 24 is for Windows only, the software can be installed on a Mac via Boot Camp if the machine has a Windows partition.
There are four ways to buy XSplit, and each includes a free license that allows users to test the software. The Premium bundle license, which includes access to Vcam, Presenter, and Broadcaster, can be purchased at the following 3 tiers:
Perhaps you've seen the news articles trying to explain why this is significant. You may have seen the positive reviews, heralding the new line released in November 2020 which includes Macbook Pros, Macbook Airs, and Mac Minis all powered by the M1. You've probably seen the latest addition to the M1 family, the new Apple iMacs which the company announced at its most recent event, too.
I understood that it was significant for Apple to ditch Intel and develop its own chip that powered its computers. And I read the reviews talking about what great machines the M1 computers are. Even still, I wasn't sold. And I certainly wasn't going to be the test dummy for the first generation of the brand new M1 chips.
However! The con here is that you can't upgrade the memory in your computer at a later date. Remember, it's built into the M1 architecture. So, if you went with 8GB Mac Mini and decided to go with 16GB later, you'd have to buy a whole new computer. For $200 extra bucks, I'd go with the Mac Mini M1 16GB model right off the bat and future proof your purchase so that it may handle all the latest apps and necessary livestreaming hardware for years to come.
To test out streaming on my Mac Mini, I used Ecamm Live(Opens in a new tab). The software is not only made for Mac, it's also the first (and only, as of publication) livestream application built to run natively on M1 Macs. Basically, apps built to run on Intel processors can be used on M1 Macs through an emulator called Rosetta 2, which comes with the latest macOS: Big Sur(Opens in a new tab). This actually has made some of those apps run faster on an M1 Mac than on an Intel-based computer. Still, though, it's going through an extra process and can't compare to what an app created for the M1 can do. And thanks to Ecamm Live's new M1-native app, livestreaming on the Mac Mini is a great experience.
On the storage front, an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD provides your fastest read and write speeds. Both the CPU and GPU pull data from your local storage, so you want an extremely fast drive. A SATA-based SSD is your next step down while hard drives are the slowest.
To capture your gameplay on a computer (or the Nintendo Switch), you need desktop software. We used OBS Studio as an example, but there are others you may like better. AMD and NVIDIA also provide native tools, but they work in Microsoft Windows only.

In 2018, we introduced the Twitch Developer Rig with RFC0004 and launched the beta version in the same year. This native application provided an alternative approach for getting started with an Extension by providing templates, view testing, configuration service management, and Bits-product management. The Developer Rig has helped many developers begin their Extensions journey by centralizing these aspects of development.
Review the behaviors above to consider any changes to your current Extension development workflow. We are also aware that members of the community have built alternative tools and services for Extension developers, and we encourage the sharing of additional resources below if they are helpful to others.

My methodology for my testing was pretty straightforward. I ran a battery of tests designed to push these laptops in ways that reflected both real world performance and tasks as well as synthetic benchmarks. I ran the benchmarks with the machines plugged in and then again on battery power to estimate peak performance as well as per watt. All tests were run multiple times with cooldown periods in between in order to try to achieve a solid baseline.
I ran a mixed web browsing and web video playback script that hit a series of pages, waited for 30 seconds and then moved on to simulate browsing. The M1 outperformed the other MacBooks by just over 25%. Those margins were far greater in our performance testing.
No matter how long the tests I ran were, I was never able to detect any throttling of the CPU on the M1 MacBook Pro. From our testing it was evident that in longer operations (20-40 minutes on up) it was possible to see the MacBook Air pulling back a bit over time. Not so with the Macbook Pro. 2ff7e9595c
